This collection contains printed materials pertaining to members of LSU's Department of Chemistry, along with photographs and letters. Printed materials consist of newspaper clippings covering the achievements, awards, grants, and promotions of the Chemistry Department faculty; reprinted articles published in chemistry journals; human interest stories published in local media outlets; and posters advertising programs in the chemistry department. Photographs include two glass plate negatives of unidentified men working in a sugar refinery and one photograph of Charles E. Coates in a group of other chemists (1936).

Charles Edward Coates arrived at Louisiana State University in 1893 and served for over forty years as a professor of chemistry and chairman of the Department of Chemistry.
